Plan GuideSuno Free vs Pro: Upgrade When You Need to Ship

Suno Free vs Pro is the first plan decision most creators face on Suno AI. Free lets you hear ideas every day. Pro is what you buy when a track must leave the app—YouTube monetization, a client handoff, or a store upload. The trap is waiting until after you fall in love with a Free-tier keeper: commercial rights do not apply retroactively, and regenerating costs credits again.
This page is not a Pro vs Premier bake-off. If you already know you need a paid plan and are choosing Studio and download volume, read Suno Pro vs Premier. Here we only answer: stay on Free, or step to Pro. Confirm live prices and quotas on suno.com/pricing.
Two gates: commercial rights and download limits
Think of shipping as two gates. Gate one is commercial rights: Free output is personal use only. Pro (and Premier) assign commercial rights for songs generated while you are subscribed—and, from September 3, 2026, for tracks you download on a paid plan. Gate two is the download limit: Free gets up to 7 lifetime trial downloads; Pro gets 20 per month. In-app listening and share links stay unlimited on every plan.
- Free: about 50 credits a day (~10 songs); older free model lane; no commercial rights; up to 7 lifetime trial downloads
- Pro: about $10 a month ($8 effective with yearly billing); ~2,500 credits a month (~500 songs); commercial rights on paid downloads; 20 downloads a month
- Same commercial license on Pro and Premier—Premier mainly adds volume, Studio, and a larger download budget
- Neither generation credits nor download slots roll over; Pro can buy add-on downloads after the cap
How one download is counted (formats, stems, failed retries) is covered in the Suno download limits briefing. Use that page to spend quota; use this page to decide whether Free still fits.
Plan features, commercial terms, and quota numbers follow Suno’s official pages and may change with new models.
Open the official pricing pageWhen Free is enough—and when YouTube monetization forces Pro
Stay on Free if you only audition styles, share in-app links with friends, or keep music personal. The moment a clip sits under a monetized YouTube video, a paid client deliverable, an ad, or a DSP upload, Free fails gate one. YouTube monetization is the clearest example: Free-tier tracks are not licensed for revenue use. Pro is the usual minimum for creators who publish weekly BGM.
- Hobby sketches and prompt practice: Free daily credits are enough—do not burn the 7 trial downloads on throwaways
- Personal, non-monetized share links: Free still works; downloading is optional
- Monetized YouTube, TikTok shops, podcasts with ads, client stems: upgrade to Pro before you generate the keeper
- Weekly short-form BGM under ~15 locked exports a month: Pro’s 20 downloads usually fit if drafts stay in the library—see the short-video BGM guide

The retroactive trap: regenerate keepers on Pro
Upgrading does not bless your Free library. Songs made on Free stay under Free rules even after you subscribe. If a Free take is the one you want to ship, regenerate it (or a tightened prompt version) while Pro is active, then download once and grab the formats and stems you need. Re-downloading that same song later does not spend another slot.
- Filter on Free with in-app listens; do not export every sketch
- When a hook is worth shipping, switch to Pro first, then regenerate
- Spend one Pro download on the locked take—master plus stems in that session
- Cancel later if you want: already-paid downloads keep their commercial rights; new Free exports do not
After Pro: when Premier or Studio is the next step
If Pro’s commercial rights solve your problem and you ship fewer than about 20 files a month, stop here. Move to Premier when you need Suno Studio’s uncapped export path, piano-roll editing, or a 60-download budget. That comparison lives on Suno Pro vs Premier—do not re-shop the Free tier once you already need to ship.
After you hold paid commercial rights, DSP targets still face distributor policy: from September 2026, Suno TuneCore distribution reopened only for industry-partner models (v6 generation)—legacy models and Free-tier files still fail that gate.
High-stakes ads and label contracts still need a lawyer where you live. This is independent guidance, not legal advice.
Audition on Free, then decide Suno Free vs Pro by whether the next track must ship with commercial rights.
